The Society for Scholarly Publishing has announced that it will host the 2012 Librarian Focus Group meeting on January 31, 2012 at the American Geophysical Union, Washington, DC.
The meeting reportedly features a panel of leading librarians with a wide variety of backgrounds and experience, primed and ready to answer the questions of publishers and industry vendors. The digital future and managing the continued economic turmoil will be at the forefront of the discussion along with a range of other topics. These include trends in pricing and licensing, the challenges of electronic resource management and preservation, the state of ‘open access,’ and how libraries are using mobile devices and apps.
As books reach the digital tipping point and electronic journals continue to add more functionality, far-reaching decisions are being made by librarians in regard to their collections. The first all electronic libraries are becoming a reality and more efficient exchange mechanisms are developing to reduce duplication of collections. With double-digit cuts in library budgets inevitable over the next few years, librarians are becoming increasingly radical in their reactions to price rises. New initiatives are being planned and executed within academic libraries - initiatives that publishers need to be aware of.
Confirmed panellists include: Rosa Liu, Manager, Research Library & Information Program, National Institute of Standards and Technology; Monica McCormick, Program Officer for Digital Scholarly Publishing, New York University; Valerie Ryder, President, Philadelphia SLA Chapter; Director of Information Strategy, Wolper Subscription Services; Pam Snelson, College Librarian, Franklin & Marshall College; past President, ACRL; and Beth Ten Have, Head of Information Services and Director of Library Academic Partnerships, Drexel University.
The event is scheduled for the day before the Association of American Publishers' PSP 2011 Annual Conference begins.
