Consumer electronics maker Sony Corp., Japan, has reportedly cut prices of its e- readers in the US for the second time since the launch of Apple, Inc.'s iPad in April. Sony has lowered the price of it Reader Daily Edition e-reader to $299 from $349 and has also made smaller reductions on two other models.
Sony is following the trend set by Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble, both of which recently slashed prices for their devices. The price war comes as e-reader developers anticipate competition from Apple's iPad tablet computer, which can also function as an e-reader.
Earlier last week, Amazon cut the price on its Kindle DX, to $379 from $489. A week before, it had reduced the price of its cheaper version of the Kindle to $189. Amazon's announcement came hours after bookstore chain Barnes & Noble lowered the price of its Nook e-reader to $199 from $234.
Forrester Research, Inc. estimates e-reader sales will probably double in 2010 to 6 million units. According to the research firm, Kindle has about 60 percent of the US market, followed by Sony with 35 percent.
