SPARC Europe’s Retain Project promotes rights retention for open access in research -

The Retain project, spearheaded by SPARC Europe as part of the Knowledge Rights 21 initiative, has released a new position paper advocating for rights retention to enhance the open dissemination of research knowledge. Titled ‘Retaining rights in research outputs to enable the open dissemination of knowledge,’ the paper presents strategic approaches for researchers, institutions, and publishers to overcome restrictive copyright agreements that limit access and reuse of scholarly work.

By focusing on rights retention, the Retain project aims to address the limitations of traditional publishing models, enabling immediate open access and broader knowledge sharing. SPARC Europe’s efforts with this initiative are expected to support scientific and educational progress by making research more freely available.

To support the adoption of these strategies, the Retain project has launched two new resources:

#RetainYourRights Webpage — A dedicated platform for authors, researchers, and institutions to access resources and guidelines on rights retention.

• Rights Retention Mailing List — A new subscription-based mailing list offering updates on resources, events, and advocacy opportunities for stakeholders interested in advancing open access.

By signing up for these resources, researchers and institutions can play an active role in promoting open access and retaining greater control over their work.
