Kent Rochford has announced his intention to retire as Chief Executive Officer of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, effective February 13, 2027.
Rochford joined SPIE as CEO in May 2018 and has overseen significant developments during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Society expanded its events and publications, strengthened community support programs, introduced an endowment matching initiative, and enhanced its public policy presence. He also guided the organization through the global COVID‑19 pandemic, supported membership growth, and advanced partnerships with the Embedded Vision Summit and The Lens.
A member of SPIE since 1989, Rochford first presented at SPIE Optics + Photonics in San Diego while a graduate student. He earned his PhD from the Optical Sciences Center (now Wyant College of Optical Science) at the University of Arizona and later held research and leadership roles at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. His career included management positions in both start‑up and multinational corporate R&D environments, as well as senior leadership roles at NIST headquarters, where he served as Associate Director for Laboratory Programs, Principal Deputy Director, and Acting NIST Director.
In reflecting on his career, Rochford noted that his long association with optics and photonics has been a privilege, and he emphasized the value of working with SPIE staff, volunteers, and members. He described the opportunity to contribute to the Society’s mission as a highlight of his professional life.
SPIE President Julie Bentley stated that Rochford’s leadership strengthened the Society through strategic vision, investments, and acquisitions that broadened its reach. She highlighted his integrity, collaborative approach, and commitment to advancing optics and photonics as key factors in positioning SPIE for continued success.
The SPIE Board of Directors has appointed a Search Committee, chaired by Secretary/Treasurer Jim McNally, to oversee the recruitment process for the next CEO. McNally noted that Rochford worked closely with the Board to ensure sufficient time for a comprehensive search and a smooth transition.
