The Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) has announced that the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and STM publisher Springer have joined the Association as its latest members.
The IUCr is a scientific union adhering to the International Council for Science (ICSU). Its objectives are to promote international cooperation in crystallography and to contribute to all aspects of crystallography, to promote international publication of crystallographic research, to facilitate standardization of methods, units, nomenclatures and symbols, and to form a focus for the relations of crystallography to other sciences. IUCr publishes a total of eight peer reviewed journals, one of which is the popular open access (OA) title, Acta Crystallographica Section E. The journal has been open access since the start of 2008 and publishes about 4500 articles per year.
Springer's 2008 acquisition of BioMed Central marked the company's entrance into the full open access publishing arena. This action was followed by the introduction of an open access publishing programme over the last couple of years under the publisher's own imprint. In addition, the publisher recently announced a significant expansion of its open access publishing activity with the launch of SpringerOpen. SpringerOpen is a new series of open access journals that will span all STM disciplines. Articles published in SpringerOpen journals will be freely and immediately accessible online, licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License.
OASPA offers a forum for bringing together the entire community of OA journal publishers. The Association aims to represent the interests of OA journal publishers globally in all scientific, technical and scholarly disciplines. The growing OASPA membership represents an increasingly diverse set of publishers.
