Global research publisher Springer Nature has announced significant strides in its journey toward net zero emissions by 2040, as reported in its latest annual Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory. The report highlights a 50% reduction in logistics emissions since the 2019 baseline and a nearly 11% decrease year-over-year, underscoring the publisher’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact through efficient logistics and local printing.
The Scope 3 supplement, an extension of Springer Nature’s Open for Progress sustainability report, covers emissions from 2019 to 2023 across logistics, physical products, and office operations. Alongside logistics, emissions tied to physical products have fallen by 30% since 2019, following targeted reductions and increased efficiencies.
Springer Nature’s buildings have also sustained lower emissions, driven in part by new energy-efficient offices, including a facility in Pune and a recently opened space in Heidelberg. This strategy reflects Springer Nature's ongoing efforts to optimize office energy usage as part of its broader sustainability goals.
With a target to achieve net zero by 2040, Springer Nature continues to use the Scope 3 data to guide its efforts and track progress against Science Based Targets. The publisher’s focused approach ensures continued alignment with both long-term and interim sustainability objectives.
