Springer Nature and CAPES expand transformative agreement to include Nature journals -

Springer Nature and Brazil’s Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) have expanded their transformative agreement to provide researchers at participating institutions with broader open access (OA) publishing opportunities, including in selected Nature Portfolio journals. The three-year agreement aims to increase the accessibility and international visibility of Brazilian research.

The expansion builds on the 2026 Transformative Agreement (TA) launched in January, which enabled researchers from more than 435 eligible institutions across Brazil to read and publish in more than 1,800 Springer Nature journals. During the first six months, more than 4,000 open access articles were published across more than 16 research disciplines, with participation extending to researchers in all Brazilian states.

Maria Lopes, Springer Nature’s Vice President of institutional sales for the Americas, noted that the research community’s response demonstrated the importance of expanding open access publishing opportunities. She emphasized the organization’s continued commitment to helping researchers share their findings across disciplines.

Antonio Gomes Souza Filho, Vice President of CAPES, explained that the read-and-publish agreement had been anticipated by the academic community since the signing of a letter of intent in December 2023. He viewed the inclusion of Nature journals as a further step in the agreement’s development.

Brazil is a significant contributor to Latin American research and regional scientific collaboration. The expanded agreement provides participating researchers with additional opportunities to publish their work openly and increase its international reach.
