Global scientific publisher Springer Nature has announced its strong support for the Government of India’s pioneering “One Nation One Subscription” (ONOS) initiative, a policy designed to democratize access to academic research and foster nationwide research excellence.
This initiative will extend research access to 6,380 institutions and benefit around 18 million researchers, students, and educators across India. As the largest publisher of academic research by Indian authors, Springer Nature’s involvement ensures that the country’s scholars can reach a global audience with greater ease. The company’s open access (OA) offerings have already boosted the international visibility of Indian research, and ONOS is expected to further elevate Indian science on the global stage.
Springer Nature maintains a strong presence in India, with nearly 20% of its workforce operating from offices in Pune, Delhi, Noida, and Mumbai. The publisher has been instrumental in supporting the Indian research community through initiatives like India Research Conclaves and Tours, conducted in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Education. These efforts have engaged researchers at 40 educational institutions across 30 cities and 15 states.
Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is also a core aspect of Springer Nature’s mission. Through its “Her Research, Our Future” initiative, the company actively recognizes and supports women researchers in India. Additionally, the Research in Science and Education (RISE) campaign has trained tens of thousands of Indian researchers, emphasizing research integrity and best practices.
Springer Nature’s endorsement of the ONOS initiative underscores its commitment to bridging the digital divide and providing equitable access to scholarly content. The ONOS policy aligns with the publisher’s goal of advancing discovery and ensuring that research benefits society as a whole.
