Springer Nature has announced the launch of Nature Progress, a new Nature-branded journal series within the Nature Portfolio. The publisher has positioned the initiative as a response to community feedback, with Nature Progress journals intended to expand access to high-impact publishing for a broader range of researchers, supported by Nature Portfolio’s in-house editorial expertise.
According to the announcement, 84% of surveyed authors welcomed additional opportunities to publish in Nature-branded titles, and the new series reflects Springer Nature’s focus on expanding author choice and meeting researcher needs. The journals under the Nature Progress series will be published as open access (OA).
The publisher has outlined that authors publishing in the new series will receive support from specialist in-house Nature Portfolio editors, combined with external editorial board members who will contribute deep community expertise. This editorial model is intended to ensure rigorous publishing standards while also reflecting the diversity of global research output.
The Nature Progress series will launch with two biomedical journals, with the publisher describing the goal as supporting the rapid dissemination of rigorously evaluated advances in the field. Springer Nature has noted that these new titles will complement its existing portfolio of around 700 fully open-access journals and build on the more than 240,000 open-access articles published each year across the company. As fully open access titles, the journals will also be supported through Springer Nature’s article processing charge (APC) waiver policy.
The announcement has also referenced Springer Nature’s longer-term involvement in open access publishing, describing more than 20 years of activity in supporting the open access transition. The company has highlighted its work with authors, funders, and institutions in developing and scaling sustainable routes to open access publishing, alongside continued investment in technology and partnerships intended to support broader open access adoption while maintaining the standards associated with its publishing brands.
Springer Nature has confirmed that Nature Progress Oncology and Nature Progress Brain Health will open for submissions on March 19, 2026, and additional details about the Nature Progress series are available online.
