Springer Nature's 2023 Annual Progress Report highlights technological advancements and record achievements -

Springer Nature continues to play a crucial role in aiding researchers, clinicians, students, and teachers in addressing the world's biggest challenges. The 2023 Annual Progress Report, published today, emphasizes the company's significant advancements across its Research, Health, and Education divisions, showcasing the increasing role technology plays in enhancing research, content usage, and content trustworthiness.

The report details Springer Nature’s substantial investment in technology, which reached over €173 million in 2023. Over a third of the employees in the research division are now engaged in tech-heavy roles. This investment has driven advancements in the publication process, safeguarded academic integrity, and provided greater value to users and customers.

Key technological milestones in 2023 include:

• Snapp Article Submission Platform: Reached 1 million submissions.

• Research Integrity Tools: Geppetto, which scans for suspicious text, and SnappShot, which detects manipulated images, identified approximately 8,000 submissions with major integrity issues.

• AskAdis AI Interface: Developed for the pharmaceutical sector, offering immediate and relevant research answers.

Springer Nature published a record number of articles in 2023, including a significant portion of open access (OA) articles. This increased the availability and usage of research content, leading to a notable rise in downloads.

Highlights of the report include:

• Primary Research Articles: 420,000 articles published, averaging more than 1,100 per day.

• Open Access Articles: 44% of primary research articles were OA, up from 38% in 2022.

• SDG-related Research: Over 940,000 pieces published since 2015, cited more than 13 million times.

• Content Usage: Downloads reached 3.1 billion, or 8.5 million per day, an 8% year-on-year increase.

The report also underscores Springer Nature's dedication to its workforce, with 9,400 employees across over 40 countries. The new "Be Part of Progress" employer proposition has boosted employee satisfaction and led to recognition as a Leading Employer in Germany, the UK, and the US.

In education, Macmillan Education celebrated its 180th anniversary with the publication of 86 new textbook series, achieving strong sales exceeding pre-pandemic levels. The Advancing Futures program empowers students by incorporating citizenship, DEI, and sustainability topics into the curriculum.

The Health division reported strong results in India and launched Medbee in Germany, a mobile-first community platform for doctors.

Springer Nature's progress translated into growing demand for its services and strong financial performance, with underlying revenue growth of 5.2% and total revenues of €1.85 billion.
