The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Board of Directors recently shared reflections on the unsettling challenges facing the global scholarly communications industry. The shifting U.S. political landscape, which threatens academic freedom, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiatives, and federal research funding, has deeply impacted the SSP community both personally and professionally.
SSP's strategic plan emphasizes the importance of fostering DEIA within the scholarly publishing community. In these uncertain times, the Board remains committed to the core values of community, adaptability, inclusivity, and integrity. Despite the challenges, the organization stands firm in its dedication to creating a diverse, inclusive environment for professionals in scholarly communications.
Recognizing the emotional and mental toll of recent events, SSP has also taken proactive steps to support its members’ well-being. The newly launched SSP Community Interest Group for Mental Health Awareness and Action meets monthly, offering resources and solutions for alleviating current burdens. SSP members are encouraged to participate and engage in these supportive discussions.
Furthermore, as a founding member of the Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Publishing (C4DISC), SSP continues to champion equity in the field. Since its establishment in 1978, the organization has worked to ensure diversity and inclusivity in scholarly publishing, fostering collaboration and providing leadership on critical issues.
As the scholarly communications community navigates these challenges, SSP reaffirms its mission to advance scholarly communication through networking, information dissemination, and collaboration. The Board is confident that, together, the community will overcome obstacles and continue making meaningful strides in the field.
