The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is bringing back its popular training workshop, 'Open Access: Understanding Mission, Models, and Mindsets,' on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Scheduled from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM ET, this third iteration includes updated content, fresh case studies, and enhanced discounts to support professional development across publishing teams.
Led by Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Scholarly Kitchen contributor, the interactive, 101-style session is tailored for both newcomers to scholarly publishing and professionals looking to deepen their understanding of open access (OA) dynamics.
New features this year include exploring current policy drivers like the OSTP memo and insights into evolving OA models such as micropayments, collective action, transformative agreements, and monograph publishing. While maintaining an accessible overview of gold vs. green OA, the session further delves into business model innovation and market implications.
SSP offers bulk registration discounts of up to 50% to accommodate team-based training for groups of 5, 10, or 25. Individual discounts apply to members of AUPresses, NASIG, NISO, LPC, ACSE, and SSP partners.
Participation is capped at 60 attendees, and no recording will be available. Those who complete the session will receive a digital badge for sharing their credentials on professional platforms like LinkedIn. Due to limited space, early registration is encouraged.
