STM introduces a voluntary tool to support sustainability in digital publishing -

The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) has launched the STM Digital Carbon Calculator, a free tool aimed at helping academic publishers measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their digital journal content. Developed using the DIMPACT methodology, the STM Digital Carbon Calculator enables publishers to estimate emissions associated with digital article hosting, access, and citations.

The initiative addresses the environmental impact of digital publishing, which—despite offering improved access—introduces energy usage and emissions that are often overlooked. The tool offers functionality to track emission changes over time and identify efficiency improvements, as well as encourage collaboration on emerging sustainability standards.

Designed for voluntary use, the STM Digital Carbon Calculator is intended to promote transparency, shared learning, and support community-led sustainability efforts in scholarly communication. It does not replace regulatory reporting but acts as a practical step toward more environmentally conscious publishing.
