Science and Research Content

STM Week 2014: One week, three events -

The STM Association once again descends on London for its annual 'STM Week' events. Industry favourites Innovations and eProduction are joined this time by a new seminar focussing on OA: Beyond Open Access.

Innovations: Social Media and Scholarly Publishing – exchanging, engaging and empowering will be held December 3, 2014.

While science has become increasingly open science and new generations are sharing and engaging so much via the social web, scholarly communication is also undergoing fundamental changes in how it approaches knowledge exchange and makes impact and quality assessments. Will peer review fundamentally change? How much can and will researchers exchange in terms of data and intermediate results? The seminar will feature young researchers who have completely embarked on Open Science and the constant sharing with their peers via social media. The program includes speakers from Mendeley, Altmetrics and researchers who actively pilot a sharing paradigm, who apply new metrics for quality assessments and who are experimenting new ways of communicating their results, including the availability of underlying data. The seminar program will offer not just talks on social channels and engagement, but hands-on features and experiences to get involved live at the seminar itself.

The eProduction seminar, scheduled for December 4, 2014 has been a constant part of the calendar for nearly fifteen years, and last year (2013) there were more attendees than ever. It is intended primarily for those in the content management world whether publishers or vendors. However, any publisher or other (librarians for example) who are aware of the importance of what publishers do in house to mediate between authors and users will find much in the presentations which will be of use and indeed of interest.

The new seminar focussing on OA, Beyond Open Access, will be held December 5, 2014. The purpose of this new seminar is to look at the positives that an open access publishing model enables or encourages. Like the other successful STM London seminars (Innovations and eProduction) there will be a mixture of keynotes and panels with an emphasis on audience participation and discussion. This is a different sort of open access seminar. The intention is not to debate the model or discuss funding problems. Almost all publishers in membership are offering an open access option and some have major programmes. This seminar will seek to look at how can open access be a step towards improvements in scholarly communication?

A special discounted attendance rate is being offered for those wanting to take part in all three STM Week seminars: http://www.stm-assoc.org/events/stm-week-combined-registration/?register.
