Swiss library BiG opts for Ex Libris’ Primo and Alma solutions -

Library automation solutions provider Ex Libris Group has announced that the Bibliothek am Guisanplatz (BiG) in Switzerland has adopted its Primo discovery and delivery solution and the next-generation Alma resource management service. BiG, the leading library of the Alexandria Library Network, reportedly required an integrated framework to transform the management of its vast collections and to expose and deliver those collections to federal employees, military personnel, scholars and the public. Alma is replacing the library's VTLS system.

According to Daniel Kohler, head of coordination at the Alexandria Library Network, the library was keen to choose a single, unified solution that would enable them to manage the metadata, electronic resources and digital collections. The cloud-based, software-as-a-service (SaaS) deployment of Alma is said to be attractive for the BiG, as it prefers to direct the resources to serving and supporting users rather than handling technical maintenance.

He also added that based on clearly defined workflows, Alma would enable the library to improve efficiency and simplify processes across many collections and departments. In parallel, Primo is expected to provide a comprehensive, customisable, and easy-to-use discovery interface for its diverse user community. This includes federal employees, professionals from the military and political communities, scholars and the general public.
