Taylor & Francis has confirmed that all articles in the 2025 volumes of three journals will be published open access (OA) at no cost to authors, following the success of its Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot. The publisher announced that sufficient institutions have renewed their subscriptions to meet the required S2O threshold, enabling the transition to OA.
Launched in October 2024, the S2O pilot invited journal subscribers to support OA conversion through a collective funding model, eliminating article publishing charges for authors. With the necessary institutional backing secured, Technical Services Quarterly, Legal Reference Services Quarterly, and Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling will publish all 2025 content OA. The initiative encompasses a diverse range of article types, including professional and specialist content that is not typically covered by other open-access (OA) models.
Taylor & Francis will continue OA publishing for these journals until a further assessment determines eligibility for a second year. The publisher is actively exploring innovative OA models, particularly for Humanities and Social Sciences, where funding opportunities remain limited.
