Taylor & Francis Online has introduced a new feature aimed at providing readers with earlier notification when ethical concerns arise regarding published research. The platform will now display a temporary alert on selected journal articles under investigation by the Taylor & Francis Publishing Ethics & Research Integrity team. This new feature enables users to exercise caution when considering the research in question.
Each year, the Taylor & Francis team investigates hundreds of research articles for issues such as data falsification, plagiarism, fake authorship, and papers produced by so-called "paper mills." These investigations are conducted meticulously, following the Committee on Publishing Ethics guidelines and Taylor & Francis’ own principles. However, because the process is thorough, it can take several months before any necessary corrections or retractions are officially made.
To address this gap, the new “under investigation” alert will now be added to articles where significant concerns about academic integrity have been raised. This will be especially useful in cases where there is a potential risk of harm, such as in research that could influence medical decisions.
In addition to the alert, readers will be directed to a new guide that explains the ethics investigation process, including how expert reviews are conducted, how institutions may become involved, and how authors are given the opportunity to respond to concerns.
Taylor & Francis has made the integrity of the scholarly record a top priority, investing heavily in technology, training, and investigations to ensure the accuracy and reliability of published research.
