Taylor & Francis journals in collective funding pilot transition to full open access -

Taylor & Francis has announced that both journals participating in its Collective Pathway to Open Publishing (CPOP) pilot will transition to full open access (OA) for 2025.

Launched in November 2024, CPOP was developed as an alternative OA model for Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) journals, with a particular focus on regions where uptake of OA agreements is high. With the funding thresholds for the pilot now reached, all articles in the 2025 volumes of Nordic Psychology and Nordic Social Work Research will be published open access without cost to authors. This includes specialist and professional content, which is often excluded from traditional OA agreements.

The CPOP model integrates multiple funding sources to support journal conversion to OA one volume at a time. Institutions participating in Taylor & Francis’ OA agreements cover the publishing costs for affiliated authors, representing a significant proportion of articles in the pilot journals. Additional support is provided by a small group of institutions maintaining subscriptions and reading access, ensuring coverage for remaining new articles.

This collective funding approach enables all articles to be published open access, irrespective of whether authors have direct funding or institutional affiliation with an OA agreement.

Taylor & Francis has indicated that a diversity of models will be necessary to advance full open access, reflecting variations in regional and disciplinary funding landscapes. The success of the CPOP pilot highlights the potential for experimental funding approaches to facilitate journal transitions.

CPOP forms part of Taylor & Francis' broader efforts to expand open access publishing pathways. Earlier in April 2025, the publisher announced the results of its Subscribe to Open pilot, confirming that all three journals involved will be fully open access throughout 2025.
