Taylor & Francis launches new guide to support patient authors in medical publishing -

Taylor & Francis has introduced a pioneering resource designed to empower patients as active contributors to medical research publications. Titled Guidance for Patient Authors, the guide provides step-by-step instructions tailored to help patient authors understand and navigate the publication process, supporting a growing movement towards patient-centered and inclusive research.

With patients playing an increasingly essential role in research projects and publications, their firsthand perspectives add valuable insight to medical literature. However, most patient authors are less familiar with the nuances of academic publishing than traditional researchers and often face additional considerations, such as maintaining confidentiality.

The new guide addresses these needs by outlining each stage of the publication process, offering patient authors a roadmap on how they can meaningfully contribute, the information they will need to provide, and what to expect after submission. It also aims to aid organizations collaborating with patient authors—such as pharmaceutical companies and medical communication agencies—by clarifying specific requirements, including the addition of “Patient Author” in publication affiliations to enhance visibility.

Early feedback from patient advocates has been positive, with many highlighting the guide’s role in facilitating patient inclusion and voice in research. The Guidance for Patient Authors is now accessible on Taylor & Francis Author Services.
