Ten members of the Dutch library consortium renew agreement with Karger Publishers -

Ten members of the Dutch library consortium ‘samenwerkingsverband van Nederlandse universiteitsbibliotheken en de Koninklijke Bibliotheek’ (UKB) have renewed an agreement with Karger Publishers which includes the publication of Open Access (OA) articles for authors at these universities.

This transformative agreement is an important step in support of a transition to more OA research both in the Netherlands and globally. The Switzerland-based company was one of the first publishing houses to implement this innovative model in the Netherlands in 2016, after the Dutch government prioritised the achievement of full OA publication for Dutch Universities in the coming years.

The agreement’s OA component enables more articles in the health sciences to reach a wider audience, removing barriers to access and sharing. It demonstrates Karger’s commitment to helping researchers and their institutions communicate their findings early and effectively.

The agreement is based on a new access and publication model which was developed in close cooperation with the Dutch universities. This model grants the participating UKB libraries and their clients full perpetual access (access that continues even after the agreement expires) to all Karger journal content from 2019 to 2021. The agreement also covers OA publication for affiliated authors. Authors can submit to any of the more than 100 peer-reviewed Karger journals, both fully OA and hybrid journals (subscription journals in which individual articles can be made OA). They need only mention their affiliation with a participating institution during submission.

The continued partnership with UKB demonstrates that Karger is open for Open Access, willing and able to support its stakeholders and the transition to Open Research.

The ten members of the UKB consortium, including all members of the Dutch Academic Medical Libraries Group (CAMBIN), who have signed the new agreement are Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, University of Groningen, Maastricht University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Utrecht University, Tilburg University, Wageningen University and – starting in 2019 – Radboud University Nijmegen.
