At the Frankfurt Book Fair, from October 9 – 11, 2013, around 60 professionals from the publishing and supplier industries will discuss strategies, production processes and the creation of innovative and successful publishing products. Located at Stand A 34 in Hall 4.0, the Forum presents trends and technologies that facilitate access to new markets. A series of twelve panel discussions will focus on important phenomena that are shaping the future for publishing managers and producers.
Last year saw the debut of International Friday, with its all-English-language programme and international guest speakers. This year's International Friday (October 11) will build on that successful start. The opening discussion, entitled 'Discoverability & Metadata', on October 11 morning (10.00 am – 11.00 am) will be presented by the magazine Publishing Perspectives.
It will focus on selling analogue and digital publishing products via the internet, and their discoverability by search engines. Creating metadata that go beyond standard product descriptions can have a considerable impact on search results. Participants include David Worlock, Outsell (UK); Jason Markos, John Wiley & Sons (UK); Dr Sven Fund, de Gruyter (Germany); Andreas Blumauer, Semantic Web Company (Austria) and Timo Hannay, Macmillan Digital Science (UK).
The second panel discussion (12.00 am – 1.00 pm) is on 'Digital Books for All: Challenges and Opportunities in Mainstream Accessibility'. Non-profit organisations and publishers are working hard to accommodate the needs of people with restricted capacities for reading, using technologies for interpreting Braille, or other reading software. When publishers prepare their content for these new technologies, the data must include more than is necessary for standard print editions.
From 2.00 to 3.00 pm, the Type Directors Club and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs, of Hermann Schmidt Publishing in Mainz, will examine the question of how typography can still be used to convey content in the classic sense, even under digital conditions. They will discuss the topic with representatives from FontShop and Monotype, and will also welcome Professor Nora Gummert-Hauser.
For the final discussion at the Forum Production in Publishing, the Stiftung Buchkunst (Book Art Foundation) will present examples of book designs, and look at international trends. Alexandra Sender will moderate the discussion for the Stiftung Buchkunst. Guests will be Sarah de Graef, Vlaamse Uitgevers Vereniging (Belgium); Annelies Lievrouw, "Fernand Baudin Prize" (Belgium); Greger Bergvall, "Svensk Bokkonst" (Sweden) and Susanne Zippel (Germany).
The Forum Production in Publishing is a project of the Frankfurt Book Fair. It is organised on behalf of the Book Fair by the Print & Media Forum AG and the Helmut von Berg Publishing & Consulting Services.
