The Company of Biologists and CSIC renew Read-and-Publish agreement for 2027–2029 -

The Company of Biologists has renewed its Read-and-Publish open access agreement with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) for the 2027–2029 period. The renewal continues the collaboration between the publisher and Spain’s national research organization, with library services provider Prenax Spain supporting the agreement.

Under the agreement, corresponding authors affiliated with more than 100 CSIC research institutes can publish an unlimited number of accepted open access research articles without paying article processing charges (APCs). The arrangement covers the publisher’s fully open access journals Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open, as well as its hybrid journals Development, Journal of Cell Science, and Journal of Experimental Biology. Researchers at participating institutions will also retain unlimited access to the journals and their archives, which date back to 1853.

Agnès Ponsati, Director of the Unit of Scientific Information Resources for Research at CSIC, explained that the renewal follows a positive assessment of the existing collaboration. She noted that the agreement enables CSIC researchers to publish open access without additional costs to authors, improves access to relevant scientific content, and supports a sustainable publishing model for the institution. She also highlighted CSIC’s continued support for independent publishers and nonprofit scientific societies as contributors to diverse and high-quality scientific communication.

Rich Blount, International Sales Manager at The Company of Biologists, described the renewal as a continuation of the publisher’s relationship with CSIC. He noted that the agreement supports open scholarship and helps researchers make their work accessible to wider audiences. Blount also acknowledged Prenax Spain’s involvement in the negotiations and highlighted the partners’ plans to continue supporting the Spanish research community over the next three years.
