The Company of Biologists has renewed the five-journal Read & Publish open access agreement with the Irish Research e-Library (IReL) for a further three years. The new agreement will run from January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2028, building on previous partnerships between the two organizations.
Under the renewed agreement, corresponding authors at participating institutions in Ireland can publish an uncapped number of research articles immediately Open Access (OA) in The Company of Biologists’ transformative journals (Development, Journal of Cell Science and Journal of Experimental Biology) as well as in the fully open access journals (Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open), without paying an article processing charge (APC). Researchers at participating institutions will also continue to receive unlimited access to the transformative journals, including full archives dating back to 1853.
The agreement aligns with IReL’s negotiations principles and ambition for publishers to commit to a sustainable transition to open access. The renewed arrangement supports cost-neutral publishing and provides comprehensive access to peer-reviewed journals, enabling researchers across Ireland to share research outputs globally without financial barriers while supporting collaboration within the international research community.
The participating institutions in the 2026–2028 Read & Publish agreement include Dublin City University, Maynooth University, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Technological University Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin, University of Galway, and University of Limerick.
