The Microbiology Society extends a warm welcome to the UK Government's newly unveiled National Action Plan (NAP) designed to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from 2024 to 2029.
In a resounding endorsement of the UK Government's steadfast commitment to combatting AMR within a comprehensive 'One Health' framework, both domestically and on the global stage, the Microbiology Society lauds the release of the NAP. Embracing the collaborative spirit inherent in the plan, the Society extends its support to the four fundamental themes outlined, recognizing the imperative for international cooperation in confronting the multifaceted challenge posed by AMR.
The inclusion of antifungals and the elevation of public awareness within the ambit of the new national action plan are particularly welcomed by the Microbiology Society. These additions underscore a significant shift towards addressing previously overlooked aspects of AMR, thus ensuring a more holistic approach to combating antimicrobial resistance.
While acknowledging the comprehensive nature of the NAP, the Microbiology Society notes with a degree of disappointment the absence of specific targets across all commitments. The Society emphasizes that concrete targets are essential for effective monitoring and evaluation, crucial components in driving tangible progress and effecting real change in the fight against AMR.
Despite this caveat, the Microbiology Society eagerly anticipates engaging with the Government's renewed emphasis on the pivotal role of civil society organizations and cross-sector collaboration. By leveraging the collective expertise and resources of diverse stakeholders, including academic, governmental, and non-governmental entities, the Society believes that substantial strides can be made towards the shared goal of preserving the efficacy of antimicrobials and safeguarding public health.
As the global community grapples with the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance, the Microbiology Society stands ready to play an active role in supporting and advancing the objectives outlined in the UK's new National Action Plan. Through concerted action and unwavering commitment, the Society remains steadfast in its resolve to combat AMR and mitigate its far-reaching impact on society.
