The Open Library Foundation launches the Open Resource Sharing Coalition (OpenRS) for enhanced consortial resource sharing -

A ground breaking partnership between libraries, open source developers, and vendors is set to transform resource sharing within library consortia. The Open Library Foundation (OLF) is introducing the Open Resource Sharing Coalition (OpenRS), a visionary initiative that promises to revolutionize the way libraries collaborate and share resources.

OpenRS emerges as a dynamic and inclusive resource sharing system that transcends the limitations of Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and Discovery platforms. Designed to cater to a diverse range of mediated and unmediated resource sharing needs, OpenRS embraces a 'consortia first' approach. The initiative seeks to empower libraries with comprehensive tools for robust and extended functionality, nurturing an ecosystem that fosters collaboration, seamless intra-consortial borrowing, and expanded sharing across multiple consortia.

The core focus of OpenRS is the development and implementation of innovative software systems, protocols, and best practices that accommodate the evolving needs of libraries, consortia, developers, and vendors. The project's overarching goal is to facilitate effective resource sharing through cutting-edge technology and a commitment to openness and transparency.

The OpenRS software, spearheaded by Knowledge Integration with support from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), will be hosted as an OLF project. It will be meticulously developed, maintained, and enhanced with the expertise of a diverse community of stakeholders. This community-driven approach will be governed by a central board elected by contributing partners, ensuring that every voice is heard, validated, and integrated into the project's evolution.

Although OpenRS's official charter approval by OLF is anticipated by the end of August, the initiative's transformative impact is already on the horizon. Core OpenRS functionality for direct consortial borrowing is set to debut in May 2024, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards reimagined resource sharing. Further enhancements will be informed by coalition feedback, ensuring that OpenRS evolves to meet the dynamic demands of the global library community.

As the Open Library Foundation propels OpenRS towards its imminent launch, the world of resource sharing stands on the cusp of a new era, characterized by collaboration, innovation, and accessibility for all.
