STM publisher Thieme Publishing Group, Germany, has won first prize for three titles at the 2011 British Medical Association's Medical Book Awards ceremony recently held in London. Through this competition the BMA aims to foster and reward excellence in medical publishing.
First prize in the Internal Medicine category went to Medical Thoracoscopy/Pleuroscopy: Manual and Atlas by Robert Loddenkemper, Praveen N. Mathur, Marc Noppen and Pyng Lee. This text is a unique combination of instructive manual and atlas. The manual section presents clinical cases with indications, techniques, and outcomes for each procedure. In the atlas section, endoscopic photographs demonstrate the application of this minimally invasive technique in various pathologies, from pleural effusion to various manifestations of lung cancer.
First prize in the Radiology category went to Diagnosis of Breast Diseases by Volker Barth. Essential information for the differential diagnosis of breast diseases on the basis of clinical presentation, mammography, and ultrasound is provided in this text. It includes over 1500 illustrations that facilitate interpretation of the information.
First prize in the Surgical Specialties category went to Atlas of Acoustic Neurinoma Microsurgery, 2nd Edition, by Mario Sanna. Step-by-step descriptions of the most common surgical approaches are complemented by clearly labeled, full-colour intraoperative photographs.
Additionally, the Atlas of Temporal Bone Surgery by Tuncay Ulug and ENT Head and Neck Surgery: Essential Procedures by Juergen Theissing, Gerhard Rettinger and Jochen A. Werner won Highly Commended in the Surgical Specialties category. Obstetrics and Gynecology: The Essentials of Clinical Care by E. Albert Reece and Robert Barbieri, was among the Highly Commended books in the Obstetrics and Gynecology category. In the Basic and Clinical Sciences category, Cranial Nerves: Anatomy, Pathology, Imaging by Devin K. Binder, D. Christian Sonne and Nancy J. Fischbein, was Highly Commended.
