Thomson Reuters report examines use of electronic tools in peer review process -

Workflow management systems provider ScholarOne, part of Thomson Reuters, has released a report that examines new practices publishers are using — with the help of electronic management tools — to streamline the review process.

The report, ‘Increasing the Quality and Timeliness of Scholarly Peer Review’, seeks to take a close look at how publishers can speed up the review process without sacrificing the quality of their journals. The actual workflow model of the peer review process may differ among various journals and publishers. Nevertheless, this report is designed to highlight emerging practices and the electronic tools that have helped journals adapt to 21st century scholarly publishing.

While peer review will likely always remain an integral part of scholarly publishing, workflow processes are dynamic. The Thomson Reuters report looks at emerging practices in the evolution of peer review. These include open models of peer review, integration of author registries such as ResearcherID and ORCID into the review process, and new types of content submissions, including video abstracts.

The report presents strategies for shortening submission time and providing authors with a more intuitive submission process; creating uniform submissions that are quicker to review and ultimately publish; and identifying the appropriate reviewers who are available right now.
