JMIR Publications has expanded its Flat-Fee Unlimited Open Access Partnership with Jisc, effective April 1, 2026. The University of St. Andrews, the University of York, and the University of Surrey have joined the agreement, while all 16 previously participating institutions have renewed their involvement for the 2026–2027 term.
The partnership covers articles accepted between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027. Under the agreement, eligible corresponding authors at participating institutions can publish without individual Article Processing Charges (APCs) across JMIR’s portfolio of more than 30 Gold Open Access journals, including the Journal of Medical Internet Research. This arrangement is designed to reduce financial barriers and streamline the publication process for researchers.
Dennis O’Brien, Vice President of Communications and Partnerships at JMIR Publications, stated that the expansion reflects a shared commitment to advancing open science. He noted that Jisc emphasizes sustainable models supporting fully open access and independent publishers, and the collaboration illustrates how institutions and publishers can work together to create a more equitable scholarly communications environment.
Eleonora Gandolfi, Associate Director (Research and Innovation) at the University of Surrey Library, explained that the agreement supports the university’s strategy for open science. She highlighted that removing APCs enables researchers to focus on sharing their work openly and rapidly, ensuring that digital health discoveries are widely accessible.
By eliminating APCs, the agreement provides unlimited publishing opportunities for eligible authors at participating institutions, reinforcing collective support for open access and the dissemination of research findings.
