The global Open Science movement, which seeks to ensure the accessibility and reproducibility of scientific research while promoting inclusive education models, is a critical component of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognizing the importance of this movement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is actively advancing Open Science practices as part of its commitment to sustainability and the SDGs.
As COP28 approaches, the UAE is preparing to showcase its role in promoting global cooperation for a greener, more sustainable future. Open Science is a significant aspect of this effort, aligning with the region's commitment to sustainable practices.
One influential initiative in the UAE furthering the Open Science movement is the Forum for Open Research in MENA (F.O.R.M.). F.O.R.M. is dedicated to supporting the development and implementation of Open Science policies and practices across research communities and institutions in the Arab region. The initiative empowers libraries, higher education institutions, research councils, and policymakers by offering activities, projects, and resources tailored to local research communities' needs.
Each year, F.O.R.M. organizes the Annual Forum, where librarians, researchers, government policymakers, universities, and international experts converge to discuss key themes and issues related to advancing Open Science in the Arab world.
This year's Annual Forum, scheduled from October 23rd to 25th in Abu Dhabi, is held in partnership with UNESCO, Khalifa University, the UAE Ministry of Education, and the UAE Ministry of Youth and Culture. The event features over 70 presenters from around the world participating in 22 high-impact sessions. Distinguished figures will deliver keynote addresses, including His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, the UAE Minister of Education, Dr. Salvatore Aricò, CEO of the International Science Council, and Heather Joseph, Executive Director of SPARC.
In addition to the Annual Forum, F.O.R.M. and the Knowledge E Foundation are collaborating with UNESCO to bring together key policymakers from all Arab States. Their aim is to explore the possibility of establishing a new non-governmental Arab Association for Open Sciences in higher education. This initiative provides a platform for global agents of change, including industry leaders, government officials, and specialists, to contribute to a more Open Arab region and a more knowledgeable world.
The UAE's dedication to Open Science demonstrates its commitment to fostering innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable knowledge sharing in the region and beyond.
