Peer-reviewed research articles that acknowledge UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding must comply with UKRI's open access policy since April 1, 2022. From January 1, 2024, monographs, book chapters, and edited collections that acknowledge UKRI funding must also be published open access.
Therefore, UKRI has published updated information to support funded research organizations and researchers to meet its new open-access policy. The updates include the UKRI open access policy and frequently asked questions and information about the implementation of the policy.
The policy sets out technical requirements for research article publishing systems and repositories, which UKRI is implementing in a phased manner. In addition, UKRI commissioned the MoreBrains Cooperative to help develop a roadmap for adoption, published an analysis by Morebrains of the metadata landscape, and an initial set of actions for further discussion with stakeholders.
Furthermore, a monitoring and evaluation framework is being developed to help UKRI and the sector assess open access progress, compliance with the policy, and effectiveness. UKRI commissioned Research Consulting to undertake a project to inform this work. Consequently, UKRI is considering the update published by Research Consulting on the project's outcomes.
Regarding monographs, book chapters, and edited collections, UKRI has been working collaboratively with the sector to prepare to implement open access requirements before January 1, 2024.
What’s more, UKRI has established the UKRI Open Access Policy Stakeholder Forum to support the implementation of the policy and broader adoption of open access. The forum, which includes representation from the research and publishing sectors, held its first meeting in October. The forum’s membership and summary of its first meeting have also been published.
