UKRI publishes updated research data policy effective April 2027 -

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has published a new research data policy that will apply to research funded through its research councils, UKRI-wide funding schemes, and certain activities supported by Innovate UK and Research England. The policy will take effect for new funding opportunities published on or after April 1, 2027.

The updated framework consolidates several existing policies and principles into a single policy, establishing consistent expectations for managing and sharing research data across UKRI-funded activities.

The policy aims to ensure that publicly funded research data follows the FAIR principles: findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. According to UKRI, this approach is intended to strengthen research integrity, facilitate data reuse, and increase the public value of research.

The policy follows consultation with the research community and reflects developments in research practices across different disciplines. It introduces a streamlined approach to research data management plans and promotes good practice in sharing related research outputs, including research software. UKRI has also developed organization-wide guidance on the responsible sharing of research data relating to people.

The framework aligns with UKRI's broader priorities, including fostering an open research culture, recognizing diverse skills and talent, and supporting responsible and trusted research and innovation. It builds on existing common principles established by the research councils and supports the objectives of the Concordat on Open Research Data.

The policy also addresses developments in artificial intelligence (AI), including the management of AI-generated data and the wider use of AI in research, in line with relevant government and UKRI strategies.

UKRI will work with research organizations and other partners to support implementation of the policy. The organization will also fund the development of resources to promote good practice in managing and sharing research software and data related to arts and humanities research.
