The University of Manitoba (UM) has launched eScholarship, a new open publishing platform providing worldwide access to the university’s research outputs and educational resources. Hosted by UM Libraries, the digital platform offers open publications, open educational resources (OER), and other academic materials.
The initiative reflects UM’s continued commitment to open scholarship, aimed at making research and learning content more accessible, transparent, and equitable.
Benefits can include:
• lower educational costs
• increased student participation in learning
• improved accessibility
• flexibility
• ability to reach a larger audience
Among the featured publications is Inviting Movements in Physiotherapy: An Anthology of Critical Scholarship, produced by the international Critical Physiotherapy Network in collaboration with the College of Rehabilitation Sciences. Supported by UM Libraries, the anthology is now hosted on eScholarship and was reviewed through an open-identities peer-review process.
The publication was facilitated by the university’s OER specialist team, which also develops open educational materials such as textbooks, interactive lab manuals, and health-research resources. These materials are freely available for use, adaptation, and redistribution under open-license terms.
UM Libraries’ Advance Open Ed project, initially launched as a two-year pilot, has now become a permanent program supporting OER creation. To date, it has funded 21 projects expected to benefit approximately 7,300 students each year.
Together, eScholarship and related programs strengthen UM’s open-publishing infrastructure, promoting collaboration, accessibility, and engagement in scholarly communication across disciplines.
