University of Sussex and DataSeer launch pilot program to analyze open research metrics -

The University of Sussex and DataSeer have launched a pilot program to analyze research articles using DataSeer’s innovative Open Science Metrics tool. This collaboration marks a significant step in understanding and enhancing open science practices within academic institutions.

The pilot program will evaluate a sample of 1,000 publicly available articles authored by Sussex researchers, covering publications from 2022, 2023, and 2024. The scope of the analysis spans a variety of disciplines, including chemistry, psychology, and ecology. Utilizing DataSeer’s advanced natural language processing and artificial intelligence technologies, the pilot will measure key open science practices such as data sharing, code sharing, protocol sharing, preprint posting, and repository use.

The insights gained from this analysis will provide valuable information on the rates of these practices, helping the university identify the most frequently used repositories and servers among its authors. The pilot data will be analyzed through multiple filters to offer a comprehensive view of research practices at Sussex.

The University of Sussex strongly advocates open research and the transition to Open Access, as outlined in Plan S. By participating in this Open Science Metrics trial, the university aims to deepen its understanding of researcher behaviors and enhance its strategy for promoting transparent and reproducible research. The pilot aligns with Sussex's broader commitment to advancing open science and fostering a more open and accessible research environment.

Through this partnership, the University of Sussex and DataSeer are poised to make significant contributions to the field of open science, setting a new benchmark for how institutions can leverage metrics to advance their research practices and policies.
