UWM Libraries and ACS Publications sign read and publish agreement to expand open access -

The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Libraries have entered into a new transformative agreement with American Chemical Society Publications, allowing university authors to publish ACS journal content.

The arrangement builds on an initial contract that authorized students, faculty and staff to read paywalled articles in more than 80 ACS journals. Under read and publish agreement, UWM Libraries cover article processing charges for authors who publish ACS journal content, enabling them to contribute articles to 13 open access journals and 73 hybrid journals. As of December 4, six UWM-authored articles have been published through ACS Publications, saving authors more than $24,000 in APCs. Regardless of which type of journal they choose, UWM authors and readers can access the resulting content through the library’s services.

This transformative agreement supports the long-term goal of making research articles immediately available online and represents a significant step in the library’s initiative to help university-affiliated authors share their work with the widest possible global audience. It also encourages a transition away from subscription-based publishing toward a more sustainable open access model and marks the seventh transformative agreement negotiated by the UWM Libraries. Additional benefits include immediate worldwide access to UWM scholarly articles upon publication, retention of copyright by authors, no extra financial contributions by authors and automatic indexing of published work in PubMed.
