Wiley has announced its intention to forge a new five-year agreement with the DEAL Consortium, a national consortium representing over 1,000 academic institutions in Germany. Commencing in January 2024, this partnership signifies a continued commitment to fostering open access (OA) publishing and marks the next phase in an enduring collaboration between the two entities.
Wiley's collaboration with the DEAL Consortium, dating back to the inception of transformative OA agreements, has set the stage for a new chapter in the realm of academic publishing. The forthcoming five-year agreement will solidify Germany's status as a pioneer in OA and ensure that authors affiliated with German institutions continue to have access to a wide array of open access publishing options within Wiley's portfolio. This encompasses unrestricted access to all Wiley journal content.
The agreement's pivotal features include supporting the transition to OA, acknowledging journals' diverse impact, enhanced infrastructure, and institutional support and collaboration.
Commercial terms have been unanimously agreed upon by the negotiating teams, with the final agreement set to be signed in mid-November. Following this, DEAL institutions will be invited to transition to the new agreement, maintaining access to well-established, comprehensive OA publishing options and Wiley's extensive collection of scholarly journals.
Wiley and DEAL intend to build upon the significant successes achieved during their initial five-year partnership, which includes: Nearly 100% of eligible hybrid DEAL articles published open access across Wiley's extensive portfolio; 90% of Wiley's article output from Germany made accessible through open access; A remarkable 83% increase in the usage of research content in Germany, leading to nearly 20 million full-text downloads in 2022 alone; and A rapid surge in the usage of German-authored content worldwide, especially in low-income countries.
The original agreement with DEAL marked one of Wiley's earliest transformative open access collaborations and has become a cornerstone of the publisher's approach to open access. To date, Wiley has entered into open access agreements with approximately 80 partners worldwide, covering over 2,500 institutions.
