Wiley releases updated Wiley Registry/NIST Mass Spectral Library -

Wiley has released the latest edition of the Wiley Registry/NIST Mass Spectral Library, a reference database that integrates two widely used mass spectrometry resources into a single collection. The database is designed to support scientists in identifying unknown chemical compounds across pharmaceutical, environmental, and forensic laboratories worldwide.

For decades, laboratories conducting GC‑MS analysis have relied on the Wiley Registry of Mass Spectral Data and the NIST/EPA/NIH EI Mass Spectral Library from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The new edition combines these two established references, expanding coverage to more than 1.2 million electron ionization (EI) mass spectra. Tens of thousands of newly validated compounds have been added to the collection, strengthening its role as one of the most comprehensive resources available.

The Wiley Registry/NIST Mass Spectral Library is part of Wiley’s broader portfolio of scientific data and research intelligence solutions, which includes spectral databases, chemistry and materials literature, and analytical tools supporting research from discovery through applied outcomes. Wiley’s spectral database solutions are widely used by pharmaceutical, environmental, and forensic laboratories, reflecting the company’s focus on providing reliable resources for high‑stakes decision‑making.

The database is available in formats compatible with common instrumentation manufacturers, supporting high‑confidence analysis across GC‑MS workflows.

Spectral databases, such as this collection, contain molecular ‘fingerprints’ captured through techniques including infrared (IR), mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Raman spectroscopy. By comparing experimental spectra against validated reference data, researchers can accurately identify unknown compounds across a wide range of applications.
