Wolters Kluwer Health, a global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, has launched Bates' Visual Guide, a new website that features an all-new series of Bates' videos demonstrating the latest evidence-based physical examination techniques. Part of the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) family of products, Bates' Visual Guide serves as an ideal companion to Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, a leading physical assessment textbook used by medical, physician assistant, and nursing schools as well as healthcare institutions.
This launch marks the first time Bates' videos have been made accessible and fully searchable online. The previous version of Bates' Visual Guide was produced in 2004 and available via DVD and CD. A sample of the new videos is available now on the website.
The new site includes 18 distinct volumes and a separate clinical skills module, for a total of more than eight hours of instructional video content. Each volume runs from 15 to 40 minutes in length and covers head-to-toe examination techniques for adults, children, infants and older patients, as well as a variety of specialized exams including Nose, Mouth and Ears; Thorax and Lungs; and Cardiovascular System. The dedicated OSCE Clinical Skills module includes a collection of videos designed to prepare students for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations, or "OSCEs."
The Bates' videos are hosted on a newly developed, web-based platform at www.batesvisualguide.com. Content on the site can be accessed from any web-enabled Mac, PC, tablet or smartphone.
The new site includes a subset of OSCE videos designed to help build clinical reasoning skills and to prepare students for their encounters with both real and simulated patients. In addition to the 18 head-to-toe and systems-based volumes, this module currently features five videos that cover common complaints - knee pain, cough, sore throat, chest pain and abdominal pain - and provide stop-points throughout to allow students or faculty to pause to consider next steps in the patient encounter.
Bates' Guide to Physical Examination, 11th Edition, and the new BatesVisualGuide.com video series are available immediately. The "gold standard" Bates text is available in full or pocket size, and print or digital formats. All formats are available via institutional subscription for medical, physician assistant, and nursing schools and healthcare institutions. Individuals also can access the site by purchasing 12-month access cards via lww.com. Later this spring, direct purchase will be possible from the Bates' site.
