A new WashPost Content Taxonomy System -

The Washington Post is building a new Content Taxonomy System (CTS) to improve newsroom workflows and create increased personalization for readers. The CTS applies as many terms as needed to describe an article. Besides, articles will be tagged with the term that relates them to other articles in WashPost published in a year. These centralized, granular terms will help the CTS to unlock more opportunities to categorize, personalize, and analyze the content.

The CTS aligns various departments, centralizes valuable signals, and standardizes processes. It is a new supplemental way of classification, so the article subjects are easily accessible. The CTS will assist The Post’s WaPo 360 project, the newsroom, and other stakeholders in navigating data and metadata.

Through this work, CTS can better describe Post content and offer internal stakeholders richer analysis to understand digital readers and the best-in-class journalism they seek from washingtonpost.com and The Post’s mobile app. Through these connections of content to readers, the Newsroom can further seamlessly curate and personalize experiences for readers.

Furthermore, as the news evolves, the CTS will expand to cover new subjects and themes and map to industry standards like the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s topical taxonomy.
