A Taxonomy for Sustainable Development Goals Indicators -

There is considerable interest in the indicators that are applicable for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Consequently, Statistics Norway proposed a taxonomy for the SDG indicators. A common taxonomy would help clarify their use and usability, either individually or in comparison to others. The taxonomy could also be used to classify and assess either a given indicator or a set of indicators.

In the taxonomy the central properties and characteristics of an indicator or an indicator set essential to establish the uses relevant to the SDGs are organized under three fundamental dimensions. Furthermore, the classification under each dimension-Goal, Perspective, and Quality-is either logically constructed, or builds on a rich typology. Moreover, changes in future user needs can be accommodated by adjusting certain elements of the relevant part of the taxonomy, without the need to alter the basic structure.

The taxonomy has been developed with an emphasis on accommodating the relevant sub-national perspectives. Simultaneously, it is generically and logically designed to make it equally suited for users at the national and international levels. Therefore, it is expected that the taxonomy could provide a sustainable classification system over time.
