Adding Richer and Interlinked Metadata to Existing Collections in Europeana -

PAGODE is an innovative project for enriching the user experience and enhancing audience engagement with the digital Chinese heritage collections in Europeana, the European digital library. Among the activities in PAGODE, a significant effort is deployed to make many of the collections in Europeana more visible and easily searchable.

Automated semantic enrichment and deep curatorial annotation based on specific keywords developed by the Sinologists is being done to improve the visibility and searchability of selected objects. The automated semantic enrichments have created additional metadata for over 20.000 existing records in Europeana.

Deep curatorial annotation of over 3.000 selected objects is being done across the summer. In addition, two campaigns were deployed in the past months: Scenes and People of China, consisting of ca. 1.900 records annotated with over 26.000 tags; and Artefacts, consisting of ca. 600 records with over 6.900 tags.

A summer annotation sprint to achieve additional 1.000 objects enriched with about 24.000 tags is being conducted with students of digital humanities master courses at the University of Ljubljana and KU Leuven.

A dedicated seminar in the PAGODE Digital Festival series to showcase the impact of this crowdsourced annotation activity in terms of user engagement with digital cultural heritage and also in education is set on 31st August 2021 h. 10.30.
