AI2 and Microsoft Research Join Forces to Widen the Scope of Scientific Research Tools -

GeekWire’s aerospace and science editor Alan Boyle reports that The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) is collaborating with Microsoft Research to upgrade search tools for scientific studies. The intent behind connecting AI2’s Semantic Scholar academic search engine with the Microsoft Academic Graph is to widen the sphere of scientific search tools.

Semantic Scholar is a free online tool that makes use of artificial intelligence to maximize the relevance of search results for studies focusing on computer science and biomedicine. On the other hand, Microsoft Academic Graph charts the networks that knit together more than 200 million academic documents and citations on a wide variety of scientific subjects. However, over the years, the two groups, AI2 and Microsoft Research, have collaborated on joint projects to enhance their respective software tools. For example, Microsoft Academic Graph can help AI2 expand the scope of Semantic Scholar well beyond computer science and biomedicine. At the same time, the AI-enhanced search strategies that have worked so well for Semantic Scholar can be applied to Microsoft Academic Graph as well.

The new collaboration between A12 and Microsoft Research is aimed at combating information overload in the scientific community. Both the companies expect to propel scientific research and technological advancements to an exciting new level by connecting the Semantic Scholar academic search engine with the Microsoft Academic Graph.
