Building a Digital Asset Management Taxonomy -

One of the most critical milestones while optimizing the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system is to build a DAM taxonomy. This taxonomy is essentially categorizing your digital assets hierarchically to make them easier to locate and track. With the addition of a taxonomy, a DAM effectively becomes a centralized content hub for your company.

Building a DAM taxonomy involves three fundamental steps. The first step is to get feedback from your team members, including knowing which assets they want to store, their overall business goals and which assets are specific to their role.

Auditing the makeup of your assets is crucial to the process of building a DAM taxonomy. Therefore, the second step would be to ensure that you consolidate all the digital assets from various teams into a single location and group standard formats, overarching themes, and expected uses of the content together.

The third step involves creating different category options for your brand, depending on your industry. The categories can include product type, department, location, or a combination of filters.

Once you have mapped out your taxonomy structure, it is time to document it before implementing it in your DAM system. Next, you should import the data structure and tag your assets in the DAM.

Building a DAM taxonomy based on these fundamental steps will ensure that you get the most value out of your platform and maximize its effectiveness. Such a configuration will be optimal from a financial standpoint and save a lot of time and effort for your team members so that they can focus on more important goals since the task of locating digital asset variants is now simplified.
