Differentiating the various forms of preprint review is challenging as they are hard to discover and not directly linked to the preprint. To counter these challenges, a simple, reader-friendly system to classify preprint review processes is being developed by the ASAPbio Taxonomy working group.
ASAPbio (Accelerating Science and Publication in biology) is a scientist-driven non-profit that drives open and innovative communication in life sciences. The non-profit promotes the productive use of preprints for research dissemination and transparent peer review and feedback on all research outputs.
To tackle the challenges of preprint review terminology and enhance preprint review discovery, ASAPbio constituted a 14 member-working group. The ASAPbio Taxonomy working group developed a draft taxonomy consisting of 8 terms, with their associated help text description and options.
Based on the feedback received during the ASAPbio #FeedbackASAP meeting on July 21, 2021, the working group concluded that the focus of the preprint review taxonomy should be on the challenges the taxonomy could solve. In addition, the group decided that the level of granularity should be implemented pragmatically to improve the clarity and discoverability of review processes.
