When it comes to technology and data management, the healthcare industry has lagged behind other industries. As healthcare continues to struggle with its data management and usage, stakeholders should learn from the data improvement strategies implemented by other industries.
Healthcare could glean lessons from data management strategies implemented by the military, aerospace, and aviation sector. For example, healthcare can learn to prioritize data standardization from the U.S. Army’s medical modernization plan.
Furthermore, healthcare would benefit from the new data strategy NASA created in 2021 to overcome its data interoperability challenges. The strategy would help healthcare to take an organization-wide approach to data sharing that considered the various downstream uses of patient information.
Healthcare can create roles and responsibilities for those in charge of data management, similar to how the Federal Aviation Administration created its Chief Data Office and Enterprise Information Management Steering Committee. This would help in assigning responsibility for problem list governance and maintenance and help make patient information accurate and useful at the point of care and beyond.
