SAGE is an online system that seeks to address searchability and usability issues of digital content in museums, libraries, archives, and Europeana. The system allows metadata manipulation in the Europeana Data Model (EDM) and other formats and models. Consequently, digital content can be enriched automatically through external services that employ state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) and web semantic technologies.
Europeana empowers the cultural heritage sector in its digital transformation. The SAGE tool was implemented in the Pagode-Europeana China project to semantically enrich more than 20,000 records automatically. The ultimate aim is to enrich more than 100,000 records and enable user validation and assessment of automatically extracted entities.
The online system SAGE produces enrichments in Uniform Resource Identifier (URIs) linked to selected metadata fields or harvest supplementary information from external sources like Wikidata. An integrated validation sub-system allows bulk validations through text grouping and text frequency sorting. The user only has to validate each text once. The changes will be applied to all the respective records, prioritizing texts that appear in more records in case a complete validation of a dataset is not feasible.
Cultural institutions can integrate diverse data types from multiple sources into a single Resource Description Framework (RDF) record or collection through SAGE. Furthermore, SAGE provides a clear overview of the results through the validation procedure. Significantly, the open-source platform SAGE improves searchability and indexing of digital content, thereby enabling Europeana to share and promote European cultural heritage to be used and enjoyed by everyone.
