The Migration Hub is a two-year project that runs from March 2018 to the end of February 2020. Christine Cormack Wood, who is responsible for the marketing and communications activity at Crossref, speaks to the researchers on this initiative of IMISCOE, Europe’s largest migration research network. During the course of the discussion, it became evident that for the researchers, identifying and extracting metadata were critical to the success of this project. The process they followed is a typical use case for identifying and extracting key metadata.
Roland Hosner and Meike Palinkas from the International Centre for Migration Policy and Development, and Bogdan Taut, CEO of YoungMinds, a business consultancy, were three of the four researchers. Nathan Levy, who is currently studying for his Ph.D. at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Department of Public Administration and Sociology, completed the research team.
The process they followed began with identifying the indisputably relevant values such as titles, names of the authors, editors, the year, digital object identifiers, and dataset and so on. These indisputable relevant values facilitated linking to the original source—the publisher’s website or the journal article website. Further, the team zeroed in on the keywords and abstracts, where available, for enhancing the richness of the information.
Importantly, the team decided to classify the items according to the taxonomy established by the CrossMigration project. Subsequently, they wanted to apply a logical structure into the taxonomy on migration research, but needed content to do that. Further, the algorithms developed by YoungMinds required something to read to categorize research accordingly. However, the body of research on migration is huge, and it is impossible for the researchers to read through every abstract published on migration. This was when the value of leveraging abstracts and keywords for this project became apparent to the team.
