A concept model is about capturing business knowledge and disambiguating business communications. When a concept model is created, a special kind of business blueprint - one crucial for information architecture, business analysis, and knowledge management - is also being designed.

As this business blueprint is critical for executing knowledge work now and in the future, it has to be shaped in a specific manner by leveraging the structural relationship existing between and among the concepts in the concept model. These elements of structure come in well-defined forms, which enable the highly disciplined approach needed to shape the business blueprint.

Furthermore, the elements of structure offer enriched semantics, which is potential computational power. Moreover, together these structural elements give the concept model a technology-agnostic business ontology flavor and provide a foundation for using tools such as the Web Ontology Language.

The reverse, however, is not true. A business ontology cannot be regarded as a concept model. For, in a true concept model, the terms used in natural language business communications are to be defined according to the meanings intended by the authors.
