Monitoring the Changes in the Demand and Supply for Skills -

A new study finds that creating a skills taxonomy with data from job platforms provides important information about the current and future demand and supply of skills in the labor market.

For this study, data from the Uruguayan jobs board BuscoJobs was used to create a skills taxonomy. The intent was to capture the skills workers need in their jobs and those related to individuals' attributes. The scope included the skills employers requested in vacancy ads and the skills workers mentioned in their online profiles.

From this study, it can be surmised that a consistent taxonomy is important for tracking labor market requirements. Furthermore, it will help employers fill vacancies, workers find decent jobs, and policymakers plan for the future. The study also revealed it is equally essential to develop a methodology that enables the taxonomy to be applied to data through natural language processing and machine-learning techniques.
