Overcoming Data Access Challenges with Data Use Ontology -

The language used in the informed consent forms for secondary use of datasets varies from institution to institution. Consequently, data access committees have to evaluate each data access request against the data use limitations manually, thereby slowing the pace of research. Common Infrastructure for National Cohorts in Europe, Canada, and Africa (CINECA) developed the Data Use Ontology (DUO) to address this challenge.

DUO is a hierarchical vocabulary of terms including human-readable metadata representing permissions associated with secondary data use and allows the consistent and unambiguous annotation of datasets.

DUO’s February 2021 release incorporates improvements suggested by users and reflects the functional split between permissions and additional modifiers that specify the permissions. As of April 2021, DUO has been used in over 200,000 annotations worldwide.

The latest released version of the DUO is available at http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/duo.owl and browsed online using the EMBL-EBI Ontology Lookup Service. Additionally, the documentation is available from the DUO Github repository.
