Panel on FAIR Vocabularies for Population Research Approved -

The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) Council has approved a scientific panel on “Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable” (FAIR) vocabularies for population research. It is a joint initiative with the Committee on Data of the International Science Council, and the panel has been constituted to make population data comply with the FAIR principles.

Population research is an empirically focused field with easily accessible and widely shared data collections. Therefore, the panel will leverage the latest standards and technologies for developing FAIR vocabularies for making population data more reusable and interoperable.

The panel will also collaborate with international organizations and academia and convert their existing vocabularies to FAIR principles. Furthermore, the panel will give special attention to coordinating with existing initiatives, like the terminology repository supported by Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX).

This initiative's ultimate goal is to make population data interoperable by publishing controlled vocabularies that can be discovered and acted upon by software. This can reduce the costs of merging data from multiple sources for researchers using population data for their research.

Members interested in learning more about this new initiative or participating in this panel's work should contact George Alter (FAIRvocab@iussp.org).
